The Editing Essentials Cheat Sheet and Guidebook for Davinci Resolve (+Plugins!)
Tell me if you’ve heard this one before: the Editor is in the midst of their latest video, when they realize they’ve been working for hours and have made only a minute’s progress in their 20-minute project.
Let’s do away with all that.
This Reference Guide started as a "Cheat Sheet", just some keyboard shortcuts and tricks-of-the-trade for beginner editors. Then one page turned into 2, then 2 into 4, and next thing I knew it was over 30 pages long.
I also took the time to custom-code a simple Plugin Pack that simplifies some of the functions I find myself reaching for again and again, optimized with Resolve's Fusion backend to use easy-to-read percentage-based values instead of pixel proportions, to go along with the Guidebook to help make Davinci Resolve accessible for newcomers.
The Plugins Included are:
- Position: easily move a clip wherever you want
- Size: resize anything, and change where it grows from
- Crop: shave off the sides of anything, using proportional values for each side instead of a hard-to-use mask
- Simple Text: the Text+ tool with an Outline and Shadow already applied for quick drag-and-drop
- Saturation: quickly raise or lower the saturation of the image without having to add a complicated color corrector or jump into the Color Page
- Background Fade: animates a subtle blur and vignette to the footage to let it fade into the background so you can overlay something on top
